Toti teen shot in home invasion, suspects nabbed on the Bluff

Four housebreakers were arrested and two firearms recovered with ammunition after a Toti resident was shot during a home invasion in Athlone Park last night (Monday, 12 March).

According to Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) committee member, George Snodey, a family was sitting with the door open in Park Drive, Athlone Park when they were confronted by armed men at about 7pm.

“The son came out of his room to see what was going on and he was shot in the stomach,” said Snodey. The men took a cellphone and fled in a waiting vehicle. “The youngster was rushed to hospital. Fortunately he is okay, with the bullet missing all vital organs.

Soon after the incident, SAPS K9 unit officers on the Bluff noticed a suspicious vehicle. The robbers tried to race off but were apprehended by the K9 officers with the help of their dogs. The stolen phone, plus another phone allegedly taken in a separate incident in the Toti area, along with two firearms and 13 rounds of ammunition were found on them. Their vehicle was stolen in the Sydenham area.

“From what we heard, one or two of the scumbags had to be hospitalised after the dogs got hold of them,” said Snodey.

“These suspects confirmed exactly what we have been saying – they just drive around and look for an open door or gate, and make their move. They have been involved in quite a few incidents now, with the same modus operandi being used.

“Congratulations to the guys involved in this important arrest. They were observant when they first noticed the vehicle, and they were rewarded for this.”
